About Margan

Our Profile

The Margan brand’s first vintage was 1997. A state of the art winery was completed on the Margan “Ceres Hill” property in time for the 1998 vintage. The winery has been built to handle up to 1000 tonnes of fruit using only the best equipment available to make wines of outstanding varietal definition. The wines are carefully hand-crafted under the winemaking skills of Andrew Margan. With over 25 vintages of experience both in Australia (specifically Tyrrell’s Wines), and in Europe, Andrew Margan combines his understanding of vineyard management with his winemaking expertise to craft wines of individual character and finesse.

The Hunter Valley is one of the few places where wine is made, characterised by a warm, maritime climate. This climate generally produces ripe grapes that transform into rich, full bodied wines with a softness that makes them a pleasure to drink.

The varietal definition that comes from this climate can be lost if viticultural management and winemaking practices are not adapted to the conditions. The use of modern techniques in both these fields are employed by Andrew Margan to ensure the best varietal definition is created from the grapes used for the Margan brand. Soft easy drinking wines with concentration on fruit flavour are the key to the wines of Andrew Margan. Oak is used only where necessary to enhance the complexity of the wine. The goal is to produce wines that are ready to drink upon release and match perfectly with food.

The six varietals produced under the Margan label have been selected as the best varietals the Hunter Valley can produce. The grapes are selected from the Margan vineyards, and from local Broke Fordwich growers, on the basis of flavour. All the vineyards selected are low yielding (average of 2 tonne per acre) which assists in gaining intense varietal fruit flavours in the finished wines. The wines are produced in the Margan winery using methods that preserve those flavours allowing the wine lover to appreciate the regional varietal definition of the wine to its optimum.

Lisa Margan, wife of Andrew, and mother of three, provides the backup marketing role for the Margan brand. This allows Andrew & Lisa control of their product from the vineyard through to the end user. This control gives the Margan brand the opportunity to bring you wines of exceptionally high quality from low yielding vineyards at exceptionally reasonable prices.

The goal of Margan Family Winegrowers is to be considered by the Australian market as a family run company consistently producing some of the best Hunter Valley varietals, from the Broke Fordwich sub-region, available in the market. Quality with value in stylish packaging are the prerequisites for success in today’s wine market.

TWICE WINNER—LEO BURING PERPETUAL TROPHY 2000 AND 2001

"Hunter Valley boutique winery Margan Family is the giant-killer at the Royal Sydney Wine Show for the second year. As it did last year, Margan won the Leo Buring Perpetual Trophy against all the biggest wineries. It also won the Restaurant & Catering Industry Trophy for the best table wine exhibited by a small producer (500 tonne crush limit) with its 2000 Botrytis Semillon. The Leo Buring goes to the exhibitor with the highest points in premium classes... for vintage 2000... Margan’s successes in those classes were the Botrytis Semillon (gold), Merlot (silver), two Chardonnays and a Semillon (all bronzes)..."
