The recently opened Cellar Door and Restaurant at the Margan Broke Fordwich winery site is one of the most impressive in the country.
Gourmet Traveller WINE
The village of Broke is located where the Great North Road diverged in early days.
The massive Yellow Rock escarpment stands grandly on guard above Broke Village and has vantage points from which to view the surrounding valley. Broke was named in 1830 after Sir Charles Broke Vere, a military colleague of the colonial surveyor, General Major Thomas Mitchell. In the late 1800s, the main highway to Sydney via Windsor ran along what is now the Putty Road to Blackland's property at Fordwich, and was a major stock route.
Numerous accommodation venues in the Broke district are well situated to accommodate the many people who travel to the Hunter to attend the popular open air annual concerts such as Opera in the Vines, Jazz in the Wines, Broke Village Fair, Weddings and other similar events.
