Our History
My family first planted grapevines in the Hunter Valley in the 1960’s when my father, Frank, established the DeBeyers vineyard in Pokolbin. From my earliest days I wanted to grow grapes and be a winemaker. Twenty vintages working under the late, great Murray Tyrrell and six vintages in France provided me with plenty of experience to allow me to leave Tyrrells and with my wife Lisa, start our own brand. We completed the construction of our winery here in the sub-region of Broke Fordwich in time for the 1997 vintage, with only 3,000 cases produced from our first vintage.
Since 1997 we have grown our vineyard area to over 320 acres of vines. The majority of these vineyards were planted by Lindemans and Saxonvale in the late 60’s on the volcanic deposit known as the “Fordwich Sill”, here in Broke Fordwich. It is these unique old vines growing on this rare soil that provide Margan with its own distinctive style. We now have complete control over all of our viticulture and all of our Margan wines are single vineyard, estate grown wines.
We now produce around 35,000 cases of wine per vintage with distribution in all states of Australia and 16 export markets. We operate two Cellar Doors in the Hunter Valley, both providing our loyal customers with an experience in wine tasting and education. Our much visited and loved Beltree Cellar Door on Hermitage Rd. Pokolbin offers the latest release Margan Wines. Our beautiful rammed earth Tasting Room and Restaurant at the winery in Broke (opened in 2007) allows visitors to enjoy the complete quality food and wine experience. Lisa and her team are doing a great job with Margan Restaurant being recommended in many food guide publications for its food, wine list, ambience and service. Members of our Barrel Room Club can also book in for private tastings, vineyard and winery tours and special food and wine events in the restaurant.
