Winner - One Chef Hat - Modern winery fare in a beautiful setting with considerate touches.
There’s something rather lovely about drinking wine in the vineyard the grapes came from. So really, a patio seat at this Tuscan-style estate almost among the wines, facing the kitchen garden and Brokenback range, is non-negotiable. With a two or three course al a carte (and dego option), you’re in for a long lunch. Margan has a ready arsenal to guide you through, from the cocktails through to a heavy cheeseboard whisked between tables. Stir a hen’s egg through silky celeriac veloute, made meaty with fat mushroom and parmesan, for instant comfort, Pumpkin from the garden comes both confit and crisp, with a luxurious coconut curry sauce and peanut crumble, while heirloom carrot shavings are twisted with crackling and tarragon atop the house-cure and smoked pork belly. Desserts showcase the same seasonal care as main courses – macerated figs with pear sorbet, maple yogurt cremeux and honey sponge, or textures of spiced carrot cake with a heart of crème brulee.
