In its 2019 Australian Restaurant Guide, Gourmet Traveller has awarded Margan one star - a reflection of the high quality of food, service and comfort. With this honour Margan also proudly retains its place on the Top 10 Regional NSW restaurants list for the fourth year running. Sitting amongst benchmark restaurants, Quay, Attica, Subo and Muse included, Margan is honoured by the accolade. A reflection of their continued dedication Margan is solidying itself as a destination, not just simply a restaurant and cellar door, in the Hunter Valley.
Owner Lisa Margan's dedication to locally sourced produce - much of it from the Margan estate itself - cooked and served simply has made Margan the poster child for the eat-local movement. Sitting on the verandah you might spot chooks jumping into the trees in the acre of kitchen garden. It seems they have a taste for white figs; luckily they leave enough for Thomas Boyd to deply in a mille-feuille - the sweet figs sandwiched between layers of flaky pastry and sweet ricotta with a dollop of ice-cream on the side. It's the perfect way to wind up a meal of lightly smoked and poached salmn, served with fresh peas, sliced sugarsnaps and creme fraiche, followed by perfectly poached chicken breat and confit chicken leg with baked polenta and tasty, crisp wafers of chicken skin. With a glass of wine from the food-friendly wine list, little wonder this place is packed.
