Wine Profile

Our Breaking Ground Range celebrates our focus on innovation pioneering alternative wines and wine styles. The grapes for this wine were picked from a single block off the old Saxonvale vineyard growing on the red volcanic soil of the Fordwich Sill. In 2018 the quality of Mourvedre was exceptional, we hand picked a couple of the rows of Mourvedre and kept it separate through ferment and maturation. 18 months later we deemed the quality of this batch high enough to bottle as a straight Mourvedre.  It is the first and the only Mourvedre made in the Hunter.

Winemakers Notes

The 2018 vintage had perfect ripening conditions with dry, warm days paired with cooler nights resulting in beautifully ripe and healthy fruit. The Fruit for this wine was handpicked and fermented in a temperature controlled environment.  After fermentation the wine was placed in new and used French oak barriques where it matured for 20 months prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes
We have been making this field blend from inter-planted Shiraz and Mourvèdre since 1997. These 50-year-old vines are the only example of this unique combination in the Hunter Valley. The grapes are picked and vinified together giving a wine with loads of character. Concentrated black forest fruits, liquorice, spice and earth. Dusty tannins add structure and the finish is long and lingering. This has consistently been one of our most popular wines.

Winemaker Notes
The 2017 vintage was hot and dry and produced outstanding quality fruit from all varieties. The grapes were picked together from the same block and co-fermented under cool conditions using cultured aromatic yeast. After fermentation the wine was placed in new and used French oak barriques where it matured for 20 months prior to bottling. The intense tannins of the Mourvedre help lift the spicy notes of the Shiraz in the wine to provide a medium - full bodied structure accentuated coupled with vanillin notes from the oak.
