2018 Ceres Hill White Label Semillon

This Semillon is a tribute to the start of Margan Wines as it is from the first vineyard planted by us almost three decades ago on the slope above the winery. It faces south east (less sun exposure gives slower, even ripening) and is on tough country of grey, alluvial clay which forces the vines to work hard giving lower yields and more concentrated fruit. This grey soil is distinct from our volcanic soil on the Fordwich sill and gives Semillon with higher acidity and finer flavours. In the winery, we leave the wine on lees for several months to develop palate texture. This one is built to age but enjoy it now as a refreshing, youthful wine.

2014 Aged Release Semillon

Hunter Valley Semillon is globally recognised as one of the truly great wine styles of the world because it develops incredible complexity as it ages. We select a single block of our old vines and pick it slightly early to ensure higher acid and a leaner structure. Semillon made in the Hunter is a pure expression of fruit quality and terroir and made without oak or other winemaking intervention. For aged release, we bottle it early for freshness and lay it down for five years of bottle age before release. The wine will still enjoy many more years of cellaring. If you can wait that long.

2010 Aged Release Semillon

The Beltree Vineyard was planted in the 1930’s by the Elliot family and is a typical example of a dryland Belford Semillon vineyard. Light alluvial soil on yellow clay creates wines from the Semillon variety of lean citrus austerity. The grapes for this semillon were handpicked in the cool of the morning from vines yielding less than one tonne to the acre. The wine has been made in the traditional low sugar manner that produces wines with great ageing potential. The juice was fermented under temperature controlled conditions to maintain all of its fruit characters.  True to Hunter tradition, no oak is used.
