Margan Family Wines and Basket Range Wine head to the Capital for one night only.
Join Ollie Margan and Sholto Broderick for an exclusive evening of wine and food at Pilot.

Both are the second-generation winemakers and grape growers of their family estates, Ollie in the Hunter Valley and Sholto in the Adelaide Hills. The two studied winemaking together at university and have made wine at each other’s wineries, as well as together in Germany. They share an interest in making wines with texture and detail, expressive of site, from grapes farmed by them.

This dinner will be kept to an intimate 28 tickets and will include 7 wines, from their respective labels plus a couple they made together. These wines will be paired with a five-course menu from Pilot Restaurant in Ainslie. This is THE restaurant in Canberra and we are privileged to take over their restaurant on a school night. Arrival is at 6:30pm for all reservations.

Basket Range Wines
In 1978 Phillip Broderick purchased a property in Basket Range, a steeply sloped place known at the time for its apple and cherry orchards. But Phillip was spending regular time alongside other key winemakers of that era. So, in 1980, he planted the first grapes in Basket Range, a mix of Bordeaux varieties.

Phillip’s first vintage was in 1983, with just 100 dozen cases made.
In 2000 the Brodericks purchased a larger neighbouring property, where they continue to live and work today. Previously home to apples and pears, they replanted that land with 4.5 hectares of vines, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

From the early days of making a few hundred cases in the family cellar, Phillip Broderick was accompanied by sons Louis and Sholto, who grew up in the vineyard, helping with picking and pruning.

Sholto went on to study viticulture and oenology, as well as completing vintages in Europe and locally. In 2016, Sholto began making wine and working in the vineyard, with a focus on organic practice and vine rejuvenation. Since then, all grapes grown on the property have gone into the Basket Range Wine label, with each wine made at the on-site winery, just beside the vineyard.
Margan Wines
Margan Wines is a multi-generational grape growing and winemaking operation established by Andrew and Lisa Margan in 1996, now managed with eldest son Ollie.

The estate now farms 70 hectares of vines following regenerative agricultural principles on the historic Fordwich Sill (Broke Fordwich GI), a truly iconic volcanic soil formation dating back 200 million years.

The estate holdings include a combination of 50yr old traditional varieties such as Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz, with the addition of some more contemporary regional styles including Albarino, Barbera, Mourvedre and Cabernet Franc. A gentle approach in the winery at Margan aims to produce wines of regional definition and varietal typicity.
