2023 Timbervines Chardonnay

Our Timbervines Chardonnay block of only 3 acres was planted in 1972 on the red volcanic soil of the Fordwich Sill and continuously produces high quality concentrated fruit with a distinct lime acid backbone. Naturally fermented on full solids in 1-2year old puncheons, this modern Australian chardonnay shows the perfect balance of subtle oak, texture, elegant fruit, and long acidity.

WINEMAKING

Part of the 1960’s planted (own roots) shiraz block was grafted to Bernard clone Chardonnay in the 80’s. This soil is typical of the Fordwich Sill, deep volcanic loam with a particularly gravelly topsoil, allowing for good drainage and encouraging a deep root system. Handpicked, whole bunch pressed directly, with full solids, to 500L French oak barrels of various ages. Fermentation is allowed to proceed naturally, with partial malolactic fermentation to follow. The wine is left on its lees until after Winter, at which point the best six barrels are selected to be bottled separately.

VINTAGE

Despite a cool, wet spring and early summer, 2023 yielded a fantastic harvest. The wetness nurtured strong canopies but demanded vigilance against disease. Drying weather with mild temperatures followed, allowing whites to ripen with perfect acidity. A February heatwave then brought reds to full maturity. This unique vintage produced structured, powerful wines for both immediate enjoyment and long-term aging.
