Interview

Long ripening with cool nights. Elegant, fresh and perfumed wines with brilliant chemistry.

Breaking ground release 2025
2025 was a distinct growing season. Not particularly warm, not particularly cool, not particularly dry, not particularly wet… unremarkable? You might surmise. Anything but. Long ripening with cool nights dialed in brilliant chemistry for the white varieties.

Acidity was high, sugars were low, phenolics were resolved. This is also the case with the reds. Low sugars leading to low alcohol’s, though there were no green characters. Colours great, though hues light. In short, A++ for whites and the reds will polarise. I like them for their elegance, they are light, fresh and perfumed.

Breaking ground 2025
The Breaking Ground range was launched with the 2021 vintage as a side project for next generation Margan, Ollie, as he joined the business full-time.

The idea was to use the existing vineyards farmed by Margan, and apply some different winemaking approaches and philosophies, to explore the stylistic capabilities of grapes grown in Broke Fordwich, with a particular eye to emerging varieties such as Albarino and Barbera.
Texture and energy to the fore, with artifice and ‘technique’ winemaking taking a backseat. Whilst the wines maintain the style brief in 2025, the varietal makeup steers clear of the traditional varieties of Semillon and Shiraz. The four wines are distinct in their style and have become core to the winegrowing evolution here at Margan.
